Who it is for. The classic British through room — sitting room at the front, kitchen open at the back, stairs carrying whatever you put in the air up to the landing. Up to 65 m² on the manufacturer's specification table covers that layout with one device rather than two.
Why it is first. On the criteria we weight most heavily it never scores badly. It works without water, so there is no tank to empty and wipe dry every other day and no extra moisture going into a room that already struggles to stay dry between October and March. At 39.5 dB it is whisper-quiet, and none of the five water-based models below publishes a decibel figure at all. Times and intensity go in through the app or the dial on the device, which matters on the evening your phone is upstairs. A 65 ml pod costs £27.00 and lasts one to three months depending on setting and hours; at twelve hours a day on a medium setting Scentech's own example is well over two months, so roughly £13.50 a month, or about 4p an hour.
Two reviews, read fairly. Dammarys, September 2026, five stars on Trustpilot: "The diffuser is absolutely fantastic! It looks beautiful, and the fragrance fills the whole house with an amazing scent." Neither she nor Trustpilot says which of the three models it was. The other side comes from Geert, four stars, September 2026 (translated from Dutch): "Good app but expensive oils. The oils are expensive compared with other products and last only a short time at maximum use." Run it flat out all day and you land at the top of that £9-to-£27 range. The profile overall is 4.7 from 281 reviews (September 2026), with no reviewer on it in the United Kingdom.

Who it is for. Open-plan ground floors, hallways with two doors off them, and long thin Victorian layouts where one device has to reach further than a single room. Up to 100 m² on the manufacturer's specification table is the biggest figure anything here claims, and the battery — Scentech states up to four days — lets it sit on a hall shelf with no cable running down the wall.
Why it is second and not first. Same technology, same 39.5 dB and the same pods as the Diffuser 2, for about £61 more. In a normal flat or terraced house that buys coverage the room cannot use, and the free-gift threshold moves from seven scents to nine, so you commit to two more pods to get it without paying. Running costs are identical: £27.00 per 65 ml pod, about £13.50 a month on the maker's twelve-hour example. The touchscreen is the practical difference day to day — guests can turn it down without installing anything — and the price only makes sense at the top of the room-size range.

This is the cleanest like-for-like comparison in the set, because Beurer is the only brand here that commits to a room size at all. Twenty square metres is a bedroom or a home office; it is not a through sitting room. What you get for the money is a competent bedside lamp that also scents the room it stands in, from a brand with a real guarantee behind it. What you give up is any control beyond a timer, any published noise figure, and the daily business of water.

The reason it is here is the review base: 103 ratings at 4.2 is the only track record on this page large enough to mean much, and it is the lowest score of the six UK models we looked at. That combination is useful rather than damning — it tells you roughly what £50 buys on the high street. The 45-minute figure is worth reading twice before you buy, and no room size appears anywhere on the page. The review text is served by a widget that would not load for us, so we quote none of it.

Eleven reviews is not a track record, and we would rather print the count than the score. Ten are five stars and one is a single star, from a verified buyer on 21 July 2026, and it is about the refilling rather than the scent: "it is impossible for me to remove the cover in order to refill the reservoir! There is no easy way to grip it and twist to remove. I was also surprised to find that the reservoir held so little water." That is one person's experience, dated and attributed, and it happens to describe the part of ultrasonic ownership people underestimate. The appeal here is the joined-up brand: device, oils at £12.00 a bottle and aftercare all from Tisserand.

It is included because it answers a real objection to the ultrasonic models: a 15 ml bottle stated to run up to ten weeks is a very different chore from a 100 ml tank you fill by hand. The matching Modern Classics oil is £11.00 for 15 ml at the same retailer, so £0.73 a millilitre — more than the £0.42 of a Scentech pod. At £65 with thirteen reviews and no published room size, it is a design-led buy rather than a specification-led one.

It is last because of one line in the retailer's own care copy: "This appliance is for occasional household use only." If you want a lamp-sized ceramic object that scents a room when guests are coming, that sentence describes the job fairly, and it is £5 more than the plainer John Lewis Electric Diffuser above with a hundred fewer reviews behind it. If you want something running twelve hours a day, it is telling you to look elsewhere on this page.
How we compared
Each model is scored out of ten on six weighted criteria: stated coverage in square metres (25%), noise (20%), the cost of scent per month and how refills work (20%), control — app, dial, timer, schedules (15%), maintenance (10%) and the size of the public review base (10%). A figure nobody publishes cannot earn points, which is why several water-based models lose ground on coverage and noise without a word being said against them.

What to look for when choosing an aroma diffuser
Water or no water
An ultrasonic diffuser is a small water tank with a vibrating plate in the bottom; you add water and two or three drops of oil and it puts a visible cool mist into the room. A waterless diffuser holds neat fragrance oil and breaks it into a dry mist with air, so nothing is diluted and no tank is involved. Five of the seven models here are ultrasonic and two are waterless. The practical difference is the chore: filling, emptying and wiping a tank against clicking a pod into place. Coverage in square metres
This is the number to look for first and the one most often missing. Of the five non-Scentech models here, exactly one — the Beurer LA 40 — states a room size. What the makers claim:

Every figure there is the maker's or retailer's own claim, not a measurement. Where a page says nothing, assume one room.
Noise
A diffuser that hisses is a diffuser that gets switched off. Scentech publishes 59.5 dB for the Smart Aroma Diffuser and 39.5 dB for the Diffuser 2 and the Pro; none of the five other models here publishes a decibel figure at all. For a bedside table, that missing number deserves more attention than the colour of the light ring.
The cost of scent per month
Hardware is a one-off; scent is the subscription. A ScentPod is £27.00 for 65 ml, or £0.42 a millilitre, and Scentech states one to three months per pod — about £13.50 a month at its own twelve-hour example, £9 to £27 across the range. Loose essential oils at Holland & Barrett run from £0.50 a millilitre (Miaroma lavender, 30 ml for £15.00) to £1.28 (Tisserand organic, 9 ml for £11.50), but an ultrasonic device uses two or three drops per fill and no maker publishes consumption per hour, so nobody can honestly turn that into a monthly figure. App, timer and schedules
Only the two Scentech models have an app. It connects over Bluetooth rather than wi-fi, so there is no account and no network to set up, but your phone has to be in the room to change anything; a schedule you have set keeps running on the device. The other five offer a timer at most.
Maintenance and safety
With an ultrasonic model the routine is water in, water out, wipe dry, and descale it if you live in a hard-water area. A waterless model has no tank; the Diffuser 2 and the Pro take a pod that clicks in, while the Smart Aroma Diffuser has to be decanted. Whichever you buy, keep the device and the oil bottles out of reach of children, run the room ventilated rather than sealed, and give pets a way out of it. Scentech states that its own oils are IFRA-compliant. We have no test data of our own and offer no medical advice; if a scent gives you a headache, stop using it.

Are aroma diffusers safe?
For most households, used sensibly, yes — but we have no test data of our own and there is no British consumer test to point you at. Ventilate the room rather than sealing it, keep the device and the oil bottles out of reach of children, and give pets a way out of the room rather than shutting them in with it. With ultrasonic models the standing water is the part to watch: the US Environmental Protection Agency advises emptying and drying the tank of a home humidifier daily, and an ultrasonic diffuser works on the same principle. Scentech states that its own oils are IFRA-compliant. If a scent gives you a headache, stop using it.
How long can a diffuser run?
That depends on the kind. An ultrasonic model runs until the tank is empty: John Lewis lists "Up to 45 minutes" for both of its own diffusers, Tisserand states four to five hours per 100 ml fill, and the Beurer LA 40 has a one, three or seven-hour timer on a 180 ml tank. A waterless model is limited by the pod instead: Scentech states one to three months per 65 ml ScentPod, with its own example of twelve hours a day on a medium setting lasting well over two months. Common guidance for ultrasonic oil diffusers is to run them in sessions of twenty to sixty minutes rather than continuously.
Diffuser or humidifier?
They are different appliances that look alike. A humidifier raises the moisture in a room and holds litres of water; an ultrasonic aroma diffuser holds 100 to 180 ml and carries scent, with a little moisture as a side effect. A waterless diffuser adds no moisture at all. If your problem is dry air in winter, buy a humidifier; if it is a hallway that smells of last night's dinner, buy a diffuser. Running an ultrasonic one all evening is a poor substitute for a humidifier and a slightly damp one for a diffuser.
Reed diffuser or electric diffuser?
A reed diffuser is passive: sticks in a bottle of oil, no power, no noise, no settings, scenting the space immediately around it. An electric diffuser pushes scent out actively, so it reaches further and can be timed and turned down. Scentech states that its models cover ten to twenty-five times the area of reed diffusers — the manufacturer's own claim, not something we have verified. No reed diffuser we found states a run time per hour or a room size, so its cost per hour cannot be worked out. Reeds are the cheaper, quieter option for a cloakroom; an electric diffuser is the answer when a whole floor needs to smell of the same thing.
Has Which? tested aroma diffusers?
We found no published Which? test of aroma diffusers as of September 2026, and no published test from Stiftung Warentest or the Dutch Consumentenbond either. That is a statement about what we could find rather than proof that nothing exists — Which? content sits behind a subscription and we did not have access to all of it. It does mean that anyone showing you a "best-tested aroma diffuser" badge should be asked whose test it was. This page compares published specifications and public customer reviews; we ran no test.
Which oils can I use?
It depends entirely on the device, and getting it wrong is the quickest way to void a warranty. Ultrasonic models take water plus a few drops: John Lewis instructs two to three drops in 100 ml of water, and the Beurer LA 40 asks specifically for water-soluble aroma oil. The Scentech models take their own ScentPods and nothing else — the manufacturer's English FAQ says plainly, "Never use water or oils meant for a water-based diffuser." The Stoneglow takes its own 15 ml oil at £11.00 a bottle.
Practical questions before you order
Can Scentech deliver to a UK address?
Be careful here. Scentech ships from the Netherlands and publishes no UK delivery time or shipping cost anywhere on its site, and when we put a British address into the checkout on 9 September 2026 the delivery step returned "Shipping not available". Availability and cost for your address are shown at checkout, so check that step early. We will update this page when it changes.
Why are the prices given as "about" a number?
Because Scentech's pound prices are Shopify's live conversion of the euro price rather than a fixed UK price list. On 9 September 2026 the rate produced £27.00 a scent, £101 for the Smart Aroma Diffuser, £132 for the Diffuser 2 and £193 for the Pro. Those figures move without anyone editing the shop, so read the number at checkout.
How does the free diffuser actually work?
It is a threshold offer. Three scents adds a Mystery Scent, five adds the Smart Aroma Diffuser, seven the Diffuser 2 and nine the Pro Diffuser. The device is only added to your basket automatically when you order through the offer page, not from an ordinary product page. Scentech describes the promotion as temporary.
What are the returns and the warranty?
Scentech gives 30 days to cancel and a further 14 days to send the product back, refunds the full order amount including standard shipping, and states that return postage is on them unless stated otherwise. One diffuser and up to 10 ml of one ScentPod may be tried. There is a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Buying from John Lewis or Tisserand instead puts you under that retailer's terms.
Does the app work without wi-fi?
Yes. The Scentech app connects over Bluetooth, so there is no network to join and no account to create, but your phone has to be near the device to change anything. A schedule you have already set keeps running on the diffuser itself. Note that there is a similarly named app called "Scent Tech" in the stores; the official one is Scentech.
Can I put my own essential oil in a Scentech diffuser?
No. The Scentech models are built for the ScentPods and other oils fall outside the warranty; the manufacturer's own English FAQ says never to use water or oils meant for a water-based diffuser. The five ultrasonic models on this page are the opposite — they are designed for loose oil, which costs £0.50 to £1.28 a millilitre at Holland & Barrett.
